Kwon Jae-Kyu was the second-in-command of the Sun-Woo Clan, head of the Elder Council and grandfather of Kwon Ji-Nie. He was also one of the Ten Grand Masters of the Murim.

Appearance[]

He is a short elderly man with slicked back gray hair. He wears a traditional Korean martial artist's attire. He often wears a very stern expression on his face.

Personality[]

Kwon Jae-Kyu is a generally calm and perceptive individual thanks too his vast experience due to skill level and age. He is able to identify his opponent's intentions and find the right way to deal with them. Exception to this calmness are cases where his loyalty or care for people is tested. When people he is loyal to or cares about are in danger he discards his calmness and is ready to avenge them in any way possible.

He is extremely loyal to his ideals and towards people he has acknowledge. His is also open minded enough to acknowledge his mistaken beliefs and change accordingly as seen when he recognized Shi-Woon's qualities and instead of trying to make him a puppet his serves him instead. Loyalty is also the reason why he remains the only one of the Ten Grandmasters who is second in command of the Clan/School they are part of. The rest went on to create their own groups while Jae-Kyu, remaining loyal to the previous Clan Heads, stayed as second in command in order to support the clan.

He also really cares about his family and friends although he hides it under his strict persona of the second in command. Both with the immature elder Jeon Jang-Il and with his granddaughter Kwon Ji-Nie he has shown to be worried and care about them deeply. However, when he speaks directly to them he maintains his strict behaviour making him seem like a person that cares only for the success of every step he makes. After a few blows with Han Chun-Woo wished that he can fight him in a normal state. In his final moments he requested Lee Shi-Woon to protect the Sun-Woon Clan and his granddaughter, Ji-Nie, showing his dedication and love to his clan and family.

History[]

Past[]

Kwon Jae-Kyu was a retainer for the Sun-Woo Clan and was believed to be a talented Murim-In which resulted in the assistant master of the Sun-Woo Clan at the time, Seonu Soh, taking a liking to him and becoming a friend of his. As the years went by Jae-Kyu became more skilled and soon became Seonu Seonu Soh's right hand man at this point helping to expand the clan's influence and to help make the Sun-Woo Clan the strongest in the Murim.[1] Years later, he would raise Kwon Ji-Nie‏‎ after his daughter's death.[2]

The Breaker[]

Expulsion!! Abandoned by the Master?[]

Jae-Kyu is seen discussing about the student of Goomoonryong, drawing the decision of making him the new head of the Sun-Woo Clan and the ongoing state of Murim with Min Sa-Oak, after Goomoonryong's events at the Koa Businesses Tower.[3]

The Breaker New Waves[]

The Beginning of a New Legend in the Murim![]

When Lee Shi-Woon arrives at the Sun-Woo Clan villa, Kwon Jae-Kyu is stood outside alongside the other clan elders. He greets him by telling him they have been waiting for him.[4]

Lee Gyoo-Bum introduces Shi-Woon to the Sun-Woo Clan elders, Jae-Kyu bows his head mentioning it's a pleasure to meet him, and introduces himself. As Shi-Woon introduces himself, Jeon Jang-Il passes comments regarding Shi-Woon, Jae-Kyu questions him about his impolite words. Shi-Woon shows the Phoenix Medallion to them. They bow before the headship. Shi-Woon tells them he’s giving it back and walks away. Min Sa-Oak asks him if they should bring him back. Jae-Kyu says he hasn't made up his mind yet so they'll give him more time as they have urgent matters and thanks the other elders for coming. Noticing the Phoenix Medallion left behind, he picks it up. Laughing after Shi-Woon said he was returning it, he claims he’s an interesting person they have now as the head. Questioned by Kwon Ji-Nie how they don't reject him since he refuses their offer. He asks if he wanted to hear her opinion. Jin-Ie asks him why he ordered her to observe Lee Shi-Woon. He tells her to leave him alone and not to let him die, because they need only his title. He tells Jinnie to leave him until gets pushed so far and fallen so deep that he has to beg the Sun-Woo Clan to save his life and asks can whether she do at least that much for her grandpa.[5]

Into the Depths of the Sun-Woo Clan's Hellish Training, Shi-Woon!![]

Kwon Ji-Nie later contacts him telling Shi-Woon is ready to come to Sun-Woo after experiencing suffering. He tells her she has done a nice job.[6]

In a meeting between the clan elders talking about the return of Lee Shi-Woon to the clan. Jae-Kyu mentions he offered him sealed protection within their villa to prevent any news of him getting out. Upon Shi-Woon's arrival to their location. He's suprised to hear Shi-Woon's request to learn martial arts for a fight. The elders gather together to dicuss his request. As Elder Jeon sugguests making Shi-Woon's opponent dissapear. Jae-Kyu says their movements are being noted and if they attack another faction they themselves could become a target. Returning to Shi-Woon, he tells him that he can't learn their martial arts without becoming the clan head. Shi-Woon agrees and Jae-Kyu introudces him to Elder Jeon who will be in charge of his training. When Jin-Ie asks if he'll be taught. He tells her it's the business of the elders, and like her mother she brings him disappointment.[7]

When the clan elders view Shi-Woon's training Elder Min asks him will he observe. He tells him they've entrusted Elder Jeon with this, and asks them why don't they attend to their own business. When he begins to move he notices Jin-Ie on the other side of the building and claims she never fails to disappoint him like her mother.[8]

As Ji-Nie accompanies Shi-Woon home, before she enters the car. He tells her to look after him. When the car containing Shi-Woon and Ji-Nie leaves Jae-Kyu asks Elder Jeon about Shi-Woon. Elder Jeon delivers a report of his training and Jae-Kyu thanks him and he begins to hope that the recent disturbances ends with this.[9]

Telling a clan member that he hasn't seen Elder Jeon lately. The clan member tells him he heard that he has taken Shi-Woon into his home in order to assist him in his training, and Jae-Kyu questions him about the training, which he confirms. Jae-Kyu he dismisses him and scrunches up his newspaper, questioning what Elder Jeon is up to.[10]

On the phone to members of Sun-Woo Clan, he's informed they've done as he ordered. He tells them to keep him and hold him down until they have further orders. Putting his phone down he claims did he really think he'd let him do as he pleases. Thinking about how hes brought it on upon himself and refers to him as a littleboy.[11]

S.U.C... a New Power That Defies the Murim World's Order Appears ![]

On the phone to Kwon Ji-Nie, he asks how have things progressed. She mentions with help from Kang Ha-Il and Han Dae-San things went well, Shi-Woon lost consciousness, and she's returning from seeing to him. Asking who's she with, she confirms to being alone, he orders her to get rid of him with her own hands. Questioning him, he explains that Shi-Woon is never waking up after losing his consciousness, declaring the matter ends with this. He mentions of what he's done for her and asks her not to dissapoint him like her mother did. Saying he'll leave it with her, he hangs up.[12]

S.U.C's Next Prey is Lee Shi-Woon?![]

When Elder Jeon arrives for clan elders meeting he asks Jae-Kyu why he incarcerated him. He mentions he summoned him because he was worried about the clan head's fight, and wanted to speak with the one who coached him. Elder Kwon asks did he forget why they decied to teach martial arts to him. Elder Jeon reveals it was to push him over his limit and make him pull out. He's told knowing that, he still sent him to the match and brought about their current situation. When Elder Jim tells him seems to passed to away. Jae-Kyu mentions a person with a broken Ki center fought against a Murim-in. When Elder Jeong walks away annoyed. Elder Min asks wasn't his questioning a little hasty as the head's status hasn't been confirmed. He apologizes and mentions he's been on edge. When Elder Kim & Min leave. He smirks knowing its too late as Kwon Ji-Nie has taken care of him.[13]

Lee Shi-Woon Starts an New Training...!![]

In a clan elders meeting he becomes shocked to learn Shi-Woon is still alive. Elders Min and Kim inform him of their decision to join the search for him and leave. As Jae-Kyu gets up, Kang Ha-Il asks him if he gave Kwon Ji-Nie a different mission. Jae-Kyu asks what he means and Ha-Ill asks if he order her to kill Shi-Woon. He slaps Ha-Il and orders him to leave his sight immediately. Walking away he mentions it was selfishness that sent his daughter away and is he willing to lose Ji-Nie in the same way. Jae-Kyu throws a book at him and says he doesn't want to hear it. Wondering how it turned out this way he questions what's happend to Ji-Nie.[14]

Better to Die Here and Now Than to Leave Behind my Friend and Escape!![]

Arriving at a coffee shop, he overhears Kang Sae-Ra tell Kang Ha-Il it will be difficult to resolve the situation in his clan without Elder Kwon's involement. To which he says how right she is, wich suprises them. Sae-Ra reaches for the phone but Jae-Kyu gets to it first. He tells Ha-Il he had a feeling he was up to something so he was keeping an eye on him. Ha-Il tells him Ji-Nie is in danger and Sae-Ra mentions she has gotten mixed up in a fight with S.U.C, and Shi-Woon went to rescue when learning the news. Ha-Il once again tells him Ji-Nie is in danger and she's his granddaughter and questions if he's going to abandon her. Walking away, Elder Kwon him tells he's never thought of her as his granddaughter and wether she lives or dies has nothing to do with him. Ha-Il runs after him goes to attack him with a overhead kick but he is aware of it and sends Ha-Il flying across the room with a palm strike. He orders his retainers to take in Ha-Il and Sae-Ra.[15]

Techniques & Abilities[]

Abilities[]

Real Master Martial Artist (Kwon Style): As one of the Ten Grand Masters, Kwon Jae-Kyu is a renowned Real Master in the Murim. He's the strongest member of Sun-Woo Clan and the only one of the Murim's Ten Grandmasters to stay as second-in-command of a clan, even though his status gives him the right to form his own clan.[16] During his fight with Joo Sang-Shik it's commented that even after he was given the titles of one of the Ten Grandmasters he still increased his powers further, becoming a "monster". When Jae-Kyu showed the ability to easily block an attack from Goomoonryong and repel him back a fair distance. During that instance, Jae-Kyu even expressed confidence that he would be able to defeat if not outright kill Goomoonryong. Later on, he was able to defeat Woon Jae-Gal in a long battle despite being injured and having his Ki disrupted from S.U.C's bomb explosion. Despite of being heavily injured he possessed enough strength to take out four of Goomoonryong's minions in an instant and would have took out a fifth had it not been for his intervention. He was also able to hold his own against a serious Goomoonryoung with only one arm but could have been killed if Shi-Woon hadn't involed himself.

Techniques[]

  • Calm Ignition Ki Center Techniques: It is a Ki-Center related technique that is needed to be mastered for twelve years for anyone to use Kwon Jae-Kyu's personal techniques. It is most likely a type of distribution technique.
  • Ascending Blue Dragon Strike: A technique apparently originating from Sun-Woo Clan. The most notable user is Lee Gyoo-Bum. Jae-Kyu used this move against Kang Ha-Il. The way the technique is executed is: It appears to be just a simple palm-thrust technique against the opponent. However, the affect is powerful enough to leave a silhouette of your palm on your opponent and can knock them a few meters away.[17]
  • Manoeuvre Techniques: He is a master at the high speed techniques that Sun-Woo Clan specializes in. His skill is so great that he can take on multiple opponents at once while moving so fast that the movements can't even be followed by master-level combatants. When he engages in combat it doesn't look as if he is moving at all, and he can move at a walking pace without anyone seeing him in combat.[18]
  • Seismic Step: Jae-Kyu is shown using a stomping technique that destroyed the car door of Lee Ji-Yoo's convertible and sent it spiraling into the edge of a tunnel a few seconds after landing on it with one leg during their fight.[19]
  • Phoenix's Lashing Wing (Bong Hwang Pyeon Ik): A technique that uses the arm much like a whip going at high speeds. The attack was powerful enough to easily snap a solid cane in half.[20]
  • Heaven Shaking Thunder Strike (Jin Cheon Il Rueh Ta): A technique that concentrates an immense amount of Ki into the fist of the user and then releases it at the moment of impact, though the strike itself is much faster than the soul-smashing strike. Jae-Kyu used this ability on Woon Jae-Gal, but much to his dismay had his attack nullified by an unnamed technique.[20]
  • Double Dragon Chain Dance (Yeon-Hwan Ssang-Yong-Moo): The practitioner kicks the target in the air and then deals the opponent a multitude of devastating punches from multiple angles.[18]
  • Wind Swallow Kick (Poong Yeon Gak): A devastating flying kick to the head of the opponent that will send them flying.[18]

Relationships[]

Allies[]

  • Kang Ha-Il: Jae-Kyu took him in as a child. He was always next to him and knew better than anyone about his love for the clan.[21]
  • Kwon Hae-Jin : According to Ha-Ill, it was his selfishness that led to him sending her away.[21]
