Kang Sung, also known as Sam-Mun-Ryong (lThree Arts Dragon), was the chief of the Martial Arts Alliance. He is an extremely powerful Murim-in, one of the few capable of challenging Han Chun-Woo.

Appearance[]

Kang Sung is a tall and physically imposing man. His white/grey hair is combed back, revealing a calm and stoic face, and is always seen wearing a traditional Chinese-style martial arts uniform.

Personality[]

Kang Sung is a calm and righteous man with a strong sense of justice who has his own beliefs that differ from Song Gijoo, Hyuntae, and the previous Shin Hyun-Pung. Though Goomoonryong killed his master and Gijoo, he doesn't believe in revenge. He initially admires Goomoonryong and tries his best to understand him, despite the fact that the Chief and his own master deemed him as their enemy. He is loyal to the Alliance and greatly values the traditions of the Murim, so when Goomoonryong mocks the relationship between master and student, he considers it as the last straw and is ready to fight him. He was shown to be willing to die if it meant to stop Chun-Woo when he was in the state of the Dark Origin State as his master told him he must be willing to sacrifice his own life when he battle him in that state. Also, he is prepared to die in order to preserve the peace in the Murim. The Former Chief stated that Kang-Sung always tries to do things and solve problems justly which put him at odd with other clans and their leaders.

History[]

Past[]

Kang-Sung fought in Shinmujengpe conquering three seats of power and gaining the name of Sammoonryong. During the meeting with his master Baek Gyeol talking about Han Chun-Woo and his master Eun Wol with the history of both of them and the secret behind Dark Origin State. Baek Gyeol tells him he must give up his own life to win against Han Chun-Woo.

The Breaker[]

Throughout The Breaker, Kang-Sung takes part in the Martial Arts Alliance's search for Goomoonryong. After the alliance learns of Lee Shi-Woon's identity as Goomoonryong's disciple, Kang-Sung corners and engages Shi-Woon. Proving no match for the Three Arts Dragon, Shi-Woon became exhausted and captured by Kang-Sung shortly thereafter. However, the alliance officials that Kang-Sung delivers Shi-Woon to prove to be impostors (secretly Ma Mun-Gi's men), and Shi-Woon escapes. Later, he listens to Goomoonryong's promise that he would destroy the Martial Arts Alliance no matter what, and comments that he went too far.

Kang-Sung later arrives to the top of the Koa Tower to do battle with Goomoonryong who has entered the Dark Origin State. Shi-Woon manages to talk his master down before being taken hostage by the Shin Hyun-Pung. The Chief orders Kang-Sung to kill Goomoonryong, but he refuses to obey, believing that the Alliance had no justification any more. Once Goomoonryong defeats the Chief and destroys Shi-Woon's Ki-center, Kang-Sung was shocked and angry (a behaviour he rarely shown) at Nine-Arts's action because the relationship between a master and a student is stronger than that of a father and a son. In demand for an explanation of Goomoonryong's actions, he prepared to battle again. But the battle can started, Goomoonryong was forced to retreat, swearing that he would return to kill all Murim's. Kang-Sung later visits Shi-Woon in the hospital to explain what happened to his master and his Ki-center. He then left Shi-Woon to wonder about his situation, believing that Chun-Woo does not deserved to be called teacher.

After became Chief of Martial Arts Alliance informed the Alliance that Lee Shi-Woon no long an Murim

The Breaker New Waves[]

A New Legend in the Murim![]

In a meeting with Lee Gyoo-Bum he asks for aid from Sun-Woo Clan. Gyoo-Bum explains that's beyond his ability as Sun-Woo Clan is currently lacking the strength to rebuild itself to help. Kang-Sung admits he knew it'd be stretch considering the bad blood between their groups and asks of him to look at some photos. He reveals there's a sharp increase of groups that ignore the alliance's command and there's more sighting of graffiti referring to Goomoonryong as god. He mentions he's concerned by a unavoidable collision between the Murim and regular world.[1]

The Breaker Eternal Force[]

Kang Sung Fighting With a Prisoner

Kang Sung knocks the prisoner into the wall.

Walking out the doorway of Impermanent Prison he tells Shinhyup Clan they've lessened his work for him, after they stop a prisoner from escaping.[2]

Upon being greeted by the group, he says they must have worked hard coming to the prison and mentions he heard news of their visit in a letter from Shin Hyun-Pung. Asked by Yoo Ji-Gun if he was being imprisoned from what they heard. He denies it, mentioning its a long story. When a security guard mentions the prison's security system has actived. Kang Sung picks up the prisoner and heads inside. After making his way inside, while on the stairwell another guard mentions of a incident currently happening. Kang Sung says he doesn't reckonise him and its his first time seeing him. Irritated, the disguised prisoner calls out the other prisoners to join them. The prisoners surround Kang Sung and his group, and attack. Kang Sung takes out multiple prisoners with a single strike and thanks them for gathering in one place.[3]

Surrounded on both sides of the stairwell by prisoners, he observes Hyuk So-Chun and others take care of the those behind him. Telling the disguised prisoner he doesn't have to worry about behind him so if he's thinking of challenging, he'd best be serious. The prisoner draws his weapons and attacks while Kang Sung avoids it. Surprised by Park Jae-Gwang's appearance Kang Sung becomes distracted as the prisoner cuts him with his knives he reveals they've been laced them with poison, suddenly Kang Sung begins to worry.[4]

When the prisoner starts swinging his knives Kang Sung avoids his attack while observing his guards and Shinhyup Clan begin to move. As the prisoner goes to attack again he overlaps his crescent moon knives until Kang Sung strikes his fist breaking both his weapon and fingers and knocks him into the wall. Facing the remaining prisoners he asks who's next since there's not much time. As the remaining prisoners runaway, Kang Sung is given a status report by a guard. Aware of the situation he asks for him to contact the headquarters and request a search and for them to move everyone.[5]

Sometime later on, while sat down in his office he tells Shinhyup Clan how troublesome the jail break is and how someone the level of Lee Shi-Woon definitely wouldn't have fallen straight down. When he asked if he'll be alright, Kang Sung confirms it until So-Chun asks to join the search.[6]

Relationships[]

Friends & Allies[]

  • Lee Shi-Woon: Despite Shi-Woon being Chun-Woo's disciple, Kang-Sung respects and trusts him. He is glad that Shi-Woon regains the usage Martial Arts even giving him command of the Martial Arts Alliance. When Shi-Woon learned of how Kang-Sung was gravely injured from his recent fight with Chun-Woo, he actually cried in anguish for Kang-Sung—something the alliance chief greatly appreciated.
  • Hyuntae: He is a brother disciple and care deeply and see what for him.
  • Song Gijoo : Just like Hyuntae he cares
  • Jung Lae Won: They have a Master and Disciple relationship. Jang Lae told him to be careful with fighting Chun-Woo putting great faith in himself.

Enemies[]

  • Han Chun-Woo: Despite being an enemy for the whole Murim and the one who killed his master and Gijoo, Kang-Sang admits he doesn't hate Chun-Woo, and the reason he wants to stop Chun-Woo's rampage is because of his respect and admiration for him.

Techniques & Abilities[]

Abilities[]

Real Master Martial Artist (Verdant Crane Style and Tai Chi Arts): Kang-Sung is a powerful murim-in who received the Three-Arts Dragon title, a very rare feat in the Murim society. However, many others believe that he could have easily achieved the Nine-Arts Dragon title but declined to preserve the dignity of the Murim.[7] As proof of his skills, Kang-Sung is one of two people to ever stand against a user of the Art of Black Heaven and the only one against a real master level fighter.[8] He was capable of evading the attacks of Goomoonryoung with relative ease.[9][10] As such, it should be noted that Kang-Sung is the only person so far in the series to fight on equal footing against Chun-Woo, at times even making it seem incredibly one-sided (albeit Chun-Woo was not in the least affected by his strikes). As a testament to Kang-Sung's fighting abilities, he eliminated seven of Goomoonryong's followers single-handedly with incredible ease, while they were an overwhelming challenge for the Martial Arts Alliance's forces.[11]

Techniques[]

Verdant Crane Style[]

  • All Counter Origins Strike: It is a technique that uses all of the users inner energy upon execution. It is possible that the user of this technique will die after using this technique.[12]
  • Full Body Barrier: A defensive-offensive technique whereby the practitioner's back, turned toward the opponent, is protected by a large circular distribution of Ki resembling a body-sized disk shield. Opponents who come in contact with the Ki are forcefully sent flying backwards.
  • Seismic Step: The practitioner uses one leg to stomp the ground. The technique is capable of literally crushing concrete and cutting through flesh and bone.[13] Kang-Sung diverted Chun-Woo's killing-intended Seismic Step away from Shin Hyun-Pung's head. Currently the only two martial artists who can perform Focus Stomp at the highest level are Chun-Woo and Kang-Sung.
  • Split Heaven Kick: An overhead axe-kick that releases Ki, similar to Spirit-Crushing Fist. It has been shown to cut several feet through a metal platform when performed by Kang-Sung out of anger against Chun-Woo for admonishing Lee Shi-Woon.[14]
  • Strong Metal Hand: Kang Sung uses the ultimate version of this technique, Strong Metal Binding, which is described by Gijoo as "a last act of desperation" where the practitioner will not let go of what they have grasped even if killed. He used this in an attempt to drag Goomoonryong and himself to death. However Kang Sung lost consciousness and Goomoonryong was able to escape but not before mentioning that he'd be in real trouble if Kang Sung had held on a little longer.[15]

Tai Chi Arts[]

Main article: Tai Chi
  • Reflection Technique: One of the greatest techniques of the Tai-Chi Arts. It is known to be able to defend against any attack and return it back to the attacker, thus the name. The only known practitioner is Kang-Sung.[16]

Quotes[]

  • I won't allow him ... or any others to be sacrificed.”
  • I don't know how it got to this. But, if this is destiny, I will not run away from it.[17]
  • Goomoonryong... until now, I have tried my best to understand you. However, in the end I can conclude that you're a totally incomprehensible existence. Let us do it. I shall fight you with everything I have.[14]

Trivia[]

  • The stance Kang-Sung used during the first part of The Breaker appears to be similar to the Iron Wall stance, a basic stance that belongs to the Sun-Woo Clan.
